AFRICA DETAILS
Africa

Africa is home to endless deserts, tropical rain forests, rugged mountains and fertile grasslands. Africa is considered by most to be the origin of mankind, and the archaelogical treasures from Olduvai Gorge as well as South Africa are among the oldest hominoid fossils in the world. The continent comprises 53 independent countries, each with a diversity of native peoples, economies, cultures and history. 1000 languages are spoken across the continent. Africa is straddled by the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and is the second largest continent in the world. Many of the countries provide refuge to unique and endangered fauna and flora, and in other countries you can still revel in the sight of massive herds that roamed the plains of Africa .

Many natural wonders are found here - Lake Victoria is the second-largest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika the second-deepest, and Lake Malawi has the highest number of fish species in the world. The smallest floral kingdom is the Fynbos Kingdom in South Africa, while the Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world, and the Fish River Canyon the second largest canyon. Despite the difficulties that the continent faces, it is still one of the most wondrous experiences to feel humbled by its raw wilderness.

Best time to travel in Africa: The best time to travel to Africa depends on what you are coming to Africa to do and see. Interests range from spectacular wildlife viewing and birding to sporting activities such as horse-riding, kayaking, white-water rafting and diving. Others come to this wondrous continent to witness a particular natural phenomenon such as the wildebeest migration in East Africa, the sardine run off South Africa or the orchid bloom in Malawi. Broadly speaking, the best time to view wildlife is during winter as the vegetation is dry and sparse, which facilitates wildlife viewing, and the game is on the move - searching for water and food. Nights can be cold, so packing warm clothing is advisable. Summer months are generally best for birding, botany and superb weather. However, malaria is an increased risk with the summer rains, so please consult your physician for the necessary precautions. Please bear in mind that the summer/winter rainfall depends on which country, let alone region, you are travelling to. Please consult our country pages for detailed information.
