Linyanti Reserve

There are many varied habitats within the reserve - marshes, floodplains, riparian forests, dry woodlands and the former Savuti Channel - today an open grassland and home to a variety of different animals. This area is very different from the Okavango and should be included in every Botswana itinerary so that travellers have a more varied and balanced experience of the country. This private reserve is an enormous area shared between four small camps - Duma Tau, Kings Pool, Linyanti Tented Camp and Savuti Camp. There are three main features of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve: the Linyanti River, Savuti Channel and the woodlands of the interior. Two thirds of the Savuti Channel are in this private reserve and guests are able to view the abundant wildlife privately and exclusively. The last stretches of Africa’s Great Rift Valley divide the forests of the interior with the floodplains of the Linyanti and it is along this ridge (and along the Savuti Channel) that one sees the best wildlife.

Seasons: The riverfront at Linyanti is good all year round. Birding can be enjoyed throughout the year. The drier months from May to October are especially good for game viewing as animals congregate around water sources.

Wildlife: You should see: Elephant, Lion, hyaena, Red Lechwe, Hippo, Crocodiles, Kudu, Zebra, Buffalo, Waterbuck, and Impala. You may see: Sable and Roan Antelope, cheetah, Leopard, Wild Dog, Sitatunga, bat-eared fox, serval

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
