Savuti

Savuti is legendary for its high wildlife concentrations throughout the year. Elephant, lion and spotted hyaena are very common sightings here. It is breathtaking to think that the Seven Hills of Savuti, collectively known as the Gubatsa Hills, were formed some 980 million years ago and were shaped over the centuries by the ancient Makgadikgadi Lake that finally dried up some 30,000 years ago. The latest geological phenomena to radically change the face of Savuti's landscape were the tectonic movements of Northern Botswana's earth plates only two decades ago and hardly discernable at the time. This caused the Savuti Channel and its dependent Savuti Marsh to parch and dry-up completely. It is said that the channel may flow again, as it has 'switched' on and off without explanation in the past. This legend continues to fuel the great mystery and fascination of Savuti and its famous dry Savuti Channel.

Seasons: Savuti is superb from November to May (wet season), as thousands of zebra, and elephant, migrate here after the first rains. As of September it gets very hot. The pans dry up from May to October, and game can be viewed around waterholes.

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
