Itinerary Details

Footsteps across the Delta

A deluxe camp and staff waiting with refreshing drinks. Your host has been active in guiding and conservation in the Okavango for several years. He will brief you on the next day's walking, mokoro excursion and other activities as well as some of the education la sessions that you will enjoy. The focus is on the original style of safari. The finest way to discover the Delta is on foot and by mokoro and your keen sensed tracker will impress you with his natural skills. The staff moves the camp essential and your baggage each day while you journey through the Okavango. Your safari is truly off the beaten track. It is an ideal environment for observation. Accommodation is in spacious twin bedded, insect proof, double fly tents with sewn in floors accommodating a maximum of six guests. Each tent has its own adjacent enclosed, rustic shower and toilet facility. There is also radio communication and daily laundry is included. A complete kitchen with freezer is transported on safari. There is a high standard of bush cuisine, including fresh vegetables, fruits and a selection of cheeses. All meals are served al fresco. A selection of beers, spirits, South African wines, soft drinks and bottled water are included. Activities included are game walks and mokoro. No special skills or training are required. Maximum time for any bush activity is 4 hours. Walking is at leisurely pace and distances covered would not exceed 6km/3.75 miles during any activity.

Day 1

On arrival at Maun Airport you will be met and assisted with registration and transfer on to your charter flight to the bush . On arrival at the airstrip you will board a mokoro (traditional canoe) and glide peacefully into one of the remotest areas in the Okavango. There you will find your 'vintage' style camp awaiting you with the friendly smiling staff ready to welcome you with a refreshing cool drink.

Day 2 & 3

After a light breakfast your guide will lead you on a walk exploring this wonderland of islands that provides a seasonal haven to about forty species of large mammals, including elephant, buffalo and all the big cats. Your guide will stop to point out various jewels of the bush, like the wonders of flora and fauna, and with his highly trained eyes the exceptional beauty of bird life from the grace and power of the African Fish Eagle to the colourful splendour of the tiny Malachite Kingfisher. Continue to your new camp for a cool drink and lunch. There is time for a siesta before spending the afternoon refining the knowledge that you have accumulated during the day. A late afternoon walk or a mokoro ride to incorporate that unique light of the setting sun and movement of wildlife to their particular watering holes. Return to camp, a warm shower, sundowner and three-course dinner culminating around the campfire listening to tales of the wild you have walked amongst.

Day 4

After an early morning activity and breakfast, transfer by vehicle to Shinde Island Camp. Shinde is nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta. Located at the edge of a lagoon, it is surrounded by clear permanent waterways teeming with bird life and game. Spend the rest of your day exploring the area on activities offered at the camp.

Day 5

Awake to hot tea and coffee served in your tent and enjoy a day of game viewing in this unspoiled Eden. Lion, leopard, giraffe, hippo, lechwe, zebra, impala and many other big game species can be seen as well as a kaleidoscope of bird life. Lunch is served back in camp, or perhaps as a picnic in the bush. After a siesta in the afternoon and tea you will embark on an evening game drive or perhaps a sunset cruise by powerboat to view the heronry at Godickwe Island. While sipping a 'sundowner' and watching the sun sink slowly over the water, you will hear the sounds of the frogs and the roosting birds before making your way slowly back to camp to enjoy another wonderful 3 course dinner by candlelight prepared by Shinde's talented chefs.

Day 6

After breakfast and a morning activity, perhaps a last mokoro ride or game drive or even another walks if you are still feeling energetic you will transfer to Maun by light aircraft to connect with your onward flight.
