The name Nairobi comes from the Masai words 'enkare nyarobe' meaning sweet water and this was the originally a watering hole for the Masai and their Cattle. Uhuru Highway binds Central Nairobi to the west, Nairobi River to the North and East and the railway to the south. There are many places of interest ranging from the Kenya National Museum, which is located on Museum Hill. The Snake Farm can be found opposite the National Museum where local snake species as well as crocodile and tortoises can be seen. The Railway Museum is located next to the railway station documents the story of the man-eating lions of Tsavo. The Mc Millan Memorial Library not only has an excellent collection of books but also houses a collection of furniture from the house of Karen Blixen and several pieces can be recognised from descriptions in Out of Africa. Parliament House can be recognised by its clock tower. The Kenyatta Conference Centre is the tallest building in the city comprising of 28 floors and was built in 1972. This building houses a revolving restaurant at the top and is an excellent viewing place for photographs of Mts Kenya and Kilimanjaro. he Karen Blixen Museum can be found in the home of Karen Blixen, which is a must for those who have read her books or seen Out Of Africa. African Heritage Gallery is located on Kenyatta Avenue where arts and crafts can be viewed and bought. The Boamas of Kenya can be found in the Nairobi suburb of Langata, a Boma is a traditional homestead and traditional dances can be seen here. Langata Giraffe Centre houses a number of Rothchild's giraffes, this is also a good spot for bird watching. Langata Bird Sanctuary is a private range where parties are accompanied by an ornithologist. Animal Orphanage is part of Nairobi National Park and looks after orphaned or sick animals; this is not a Zoo but a hospital for the animals.
