Much of the lakeshore and the peninsula area that surround Cape Maclear, the lake itself and several offshore islands are part of the Lake Malawi National Park and is one of the few freshwater marine parks in Africa. Despite an increased influx of visitors over the last few years, this place has not lost its village feel. The 'beach' is popular and known for its sand, superb sunsets, rest and recreation and most people passing through Malawi stay her at one time or another. Once you have exhausted the water activities and you may feel like a change or a new challenge, there is a wide range of hikes and walks in the hills that form a horseshoe around the plain behind the village and beach. Walk to Otter Point or follow the small path near the entrance gate that leads towards the hills overlooking the bay and a few hundred metres up to the site where there is a small group of missionary graves. Just inside the Golden Sands area, which forms part of the visitors centre (well worth a visit) is the Lake Malawi National Park Museum and Aquarium. Another recommended activity is to take a boat ride to West Thumbi Island where the fish are incredible and the fish eagles plentiful. If you take a boat around Otter Point and past the next village, you can visit the huge hippo pool and watch these magnificent huge beasts lolling in the shallows. <b>Seasons</b> Two seasons can be recognised; the dry season from Apr-Nov, and the wet season from Dec-Mar. A brief hot and humid period occurs between Nov-Dec. The best time to travel to Lake Malawi is in the dry season. <b>Wildlife</b> 450 species of freshwater tropical fish. Spectacular birdlife, including kingfisher, fish eagle, heron, jacana, egret, white-breasted cormorant, <b> Precautions</b> Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
