VWAZA MARSH GAME RESERVE DETAILS
Vwaza Marsh Game reserve

The low-lying area of Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is an interesting contrast to the high Nyika Plateau. Most of the reserve is flat and covered with Mopane and Miombo woodland, but the eastern side is hilly and the reserve is rich in wetlands with the Vwaza Marsh itself in the North and Lake Kazuni in the South. These wetlands provide a haven for animals and birdlife. Two camps occur in this reserve, both are in a spectacular setting on the edge of Lake Kazuni in the south east corner of the reserve. In front of the camps an expanse of flat water spreads out surrounded by low hills and Miombo woodland, with a steady stream of animals coming down to water.

Seasons: Birding is best from Nov-April. The best time to view game is in the dry season from Apr-Nov.

Wildlife: You should see: elephant, hippo, buffalo, kudu, impala, bushbuck, warthog, baboon, grey duiker, puku, Lichtensteins hartebeest, roan antelope, eland, zebra, reedbuck, sable antelope and klipspringer. You may see: lion, leopard, spotted hyaena and wild dog

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
