Bazaruto

Situated just off the mainland of Mozambique, about 750km north of Maputo are the islands of Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque and Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) making up the Bazaruto Archipelago. The archipelago separated from the mainland some 10 000 years ago, and natural inhabitants include freshwater crocodiles, samango monkeys, 11 mammal species, 40 butterfly species, numeours birds and 200 offshore fish species - these animals are found in diverse habitats such as mangroves, grassland, forested dunes and freshwater lakes. Access to the islands from the mainland of Vilanculos is by boat (traditional dhows or speedboat) or by seaplane. There are a wide variety of activities on offer at the island lodges. Diving on the many stunning reefs is optional, while sailing safaris to outlying reefs or islands on a catamaran or hobie-cat, windsurfer or paddle ski for a shorter excursion are also possible. There is also water-skiing and paragliding.

Seasons: Apr-Sep (winter) is the best time to visit Mozambique, as the weather is pleasant. Jan-Mar can be very hot and humid.

Wildlife: Declared a national park in 1971, the archipelago has among its wildlife 180 species of birds, endemic butterflies, Suni antelope and freshwater crocodile. You should see: reef fish such as parrot fish, wrasse, angel fish, puffer fish, octopus, clown fish, bass, cod, grouper, You may see: freshwater crocodiles, red duiker, samango monkey, dolphin, dugong, game fish, marine turtle, giant lobster, manta ray, sea horse, shark, lion fish, flamingoes and several species of sea bird.

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
