The lush savannah area of East Caprivi is bordered by the Kwando, Linyanti, Chobe and the Zambezi River and is a region of swamps and flood plains. Wildlife in the Caprivi has recovered from years of poaching, and its superb conservation areas may in the future rival Etosha. Almost 70% of the bird species found in Namibia have been recorded in the Caprivi. There are several safari lodges in the area and activities include hiking, game-viewing safaris or a river trip in a traditional mokoro. There are also game-viewing drives in the Mamili and Mudumu National Parks. A river trip with a difference is a cruise on the opulent custom-built Zambezi Queen, a 142-foot riverboat which departs from the Zambezi Lodge and which offers a unique game-viewing experience. 

Seasons: The best time to view game is during the cooler, dry months between May-Oct. The average daily temperature is 26 degrees Celsius and game is easily visible. Days throughout the year are generally pleasant.

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
