North Island

North Island is one of forty inner granitic islands of the Seychelles that are located around the two main islands of Mahé and Praslin. The island offers four beaches that are located at each end of the compass and is able to ensure a wonderful year-round tropical beach and island experience. Facilities include 11 handcrafted air-conditioned guest villas. There are a central dining room, lounge and library; a beautifully located health spa and gym; a breathtakingly beautiful swimming pool hewn into a granitic outcrop and a sunset bar and restaurant tucked away on the western side of the island. In 1784 a Portuguese ship was wrecked on North Island. After spending some time marooned on the island, a small handful of the ship's crew built a makeshift raft and risked their lives sailing to Mahé to find rescue. Officially, the Island's first concession was given in 1826 to a woman, Madam Marie Josephine Celerine Beaufond, a descendant of French settlers from Bourbon (now Reunion). The Island remained in her family's name for the next one hundred and fifty years, as a plantation for growing fruits and spices, mining Guano, fish oil and finally producing copra - the oil pressed from the flesh of a coconut. In the early days North Island would probably have been planted full with vanilla, patchouli, cinnamon, ylang-ylang, citronella, nutmeg, cloves and all sorts of fruit. North Island was bought in recognition of its potential as a Noag's Ark; a sanctuary where natural habitats could be rehabilitated and where critically endangered Seychelles fauna and flora could be re-introduced and given a place to regenerate.

Seasons: Seychelles has a pleasant year-round climate with the highest average monthly temperature seldom going above 32 degrees C and the lowest seldom below 27 degrees C. The cool, dry south east trade winds blow from May to September and the wetter, north west trades from December to March. December and January are usually the wettest months with around 300mm of rain being recorded on average.
