Imfolozi lies in the heart of Zululand, where ancient trails lead through the thornveld and along the mighty rivers of Africa's oldest established wilderness area. Besides the elephant, leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino, it harbours the elusive cheetah, wild dogs and many other well-known bushveld species inhabit the park, offering visitors a rich game viewing experience. "Operation Rhino" in the 1950's won Imfolozi world recognition for white rhino conservation and its specialist Game Capture Unit. Hluhluwe, in the north, is characterised by diverse terrain and vegetation and is exceptional for its biodiversity. <b>Seasons</b> Zululand has a warm, sub-tropical climate with summer rainfall. Summer (Oct-Mar) is hot and humid (temperature average 28 degrees Celsius). Winter (Apr-Sep) temperatures average 23 degrees Celsius. Days are warm, dry and clear. <b>Wildlife</b> You should see: lion, elephant, buffalo, black and white rhino, blue wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, reedbuck, nyala, kudu, bushbuck, steenbuck, duiker, warthog, hyaena You may see: leopard, cheetah, wild dog Over 300 bird species have been recorded. <b>Precautions</b> Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
