Lake Manyara National Park

Manyara was established specifically to protect the elephant herds that have made the area world-renowned. But heavy poaching in the 1970's and 1980's decimated the herds, although they are now recovering and returning to their former strengths. Manyara is a birding paradise with more than 380 species, especially for waterfowl and migrants, and the forests are one of the best places to see leopards. Lions hunt on the grassy shores of the lake, and are known for their habit of climbing trees. Seasons Best game views months are December to February and May to July, tapering off in August and September.

Wildlife: 380 bird species have been recorded. You should see: elephant, lion, Olive baboon, giraffe, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, waterbuck, crocodiles, impala, warthog, Greater and Lesser flamingoes, pink-backed pelicans You may see: Leopard, Cape clawless otter, klipspringers, mongoose,

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
