The park extends to the west of the Kafue river, a landscape diverse in habitat and wildlife. Miombo woodland and grass plains dominate the environment, sustaining large herds of buffalo and zebra, wildebeest, sable and hartebeest. The river's iblue-green waters are fringed by a narrow strip of lush forest, a riverine wonderland that is home to a superb array of birds - giant kingfisher, African darter and finfoot, purple crested loerie, stork, crane and fish eagle. The Bussing flatland of the north is a beautiful area of grassland and flood plain, dotted with 'islands' of vast termite mounds with fig and phoenix palms.The river terraces and the marshlands beyond sustain herds of elegant red lechwe, an antelope species was threatened with extinction but has now made a remarkable recovery. 

Seasons: Wildlife is best viewed in the dry season (Apr-Oct). The beauty of the park is at its best after the rains in the first half of the year. Many of the internal roads are inaccessible between November and April. 

Wildlife: Over 400 species of birds have been recorded throughout the park You should see: elephant, cheetah, lion, hippo, lechwe, blue wildebeest, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, defassa waterbuck, tsessebe, hartebeest, buffalo, zebra, reedbuck, oribi, puku, impala, bushpig, warthog , side-striped jackal, duiker. civet, genet, mongoose You may see: sitatunga, leopard, puku, sable and roan antelope, oribi 

Precautions: Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
