This safari starts at Kariba and ends in Chirundu. On this safari you have a pleasant walk down into the gorge and you also do canoeing. You should be fairly fit for this safari.

  • Road transfers to and from the safari from Kariba and from Chirundu/Mana Pools in open 4x4 vehicles. These transfers can be dusty and bumpy. 
  • We do cater for dietary preferences, such as vegetarian, diabetic however we do require advance warning at least four weeks.  
  • Certain drinks, cordials not minerals. There is no alcohol, other than wine with dinner each evening. If guests would like to take their own alcohol, minerals and bottled water, these can be purchased in Kariba. We do supply adequate cooler boxes. 
  • All canoeing equipment. The canoe are two-man Canadian style canoes, and the paddles are American Carlisle paddles. 
  • All camping equipment. Two-man dome tents, sleeping bags, liners, sleeping roll, mosquito net, fly sheet, ground sheet and tarpaulin (in case of rainy weather). 
  • Fully qualified canoe guides. 
  • National Park fees which are payable directly to parks en route. 
Itinerary Details

Start:

Scheduled flights: Harare Airport Your briefing will be held at Kariba Breezes Hotel at 18:15 at the lower pool terrace the evening before your trip departs. After the briefing you will be asked to sign an indemnity form. Canoeing Safaris will collect you for the briefing and return you to your hotel afterwards. Please note that this is a camping safari where there are no fixed ablution facilities along the way. All times given in this trip description are approximate. They will vary from trip to trip.

Day 1

Canoeing Safaris will collect you from your hotel the morning of your safari in time for a check in at the Canoeing Safaris' office at 08:00 to hand in any extra luggage and valuables. Please do not take your passport on the river with you! Your safari will depart from Kariba Breezes at 08:30 for shopping to purchase any extra drinks for your trip. After arriving at the Kariba Gorge, your luggage is then carried into the gorge and your group will walk the 1.5km down to the river. Here you will meet all your canoeing and camping equipment that has been carried into the gorge already. A safety talk and demonstration on how to paddle a canoe will be given to your group. At 11:00 paddling will begin until a stop is made for lunch at 13:00. Lunch is a picnic style lunch with time for a siesta afterwards to pass the heat of the day until 14:30 / 15:00. Your group then paddles until about 17:00 when you set up camp on an island in the middle of the river named Crocodile Rocks. There is time to have a bucket bath, relax and have dinner after a brief safety talk on camping. Distance paddled: 18 km

Day 2

Your group will be woken at sunrise for tea, coffee and biscuits before you start canoeing. Between 08:00 and 10:30 a stop will be made for breakfast. Your group will resume canoeing until a lunch stop is made at 13:00, with time for a siesta. Between 15:00 and 17:00 your group will paddle to the next camping spot at Twin Logs Island. Distance paddled: 27 km

Day 3

Your group will be woken at sunrise for tea, coffee, biscuits and breakfast before you start canoeing. Paddling will start around 08:00. Between 10:30 and 11:00 you will reach the pick up point at Chirundu where your equipment will be loaded for your return trip to Kariba or the Kariba airport. Arrival back in Kariba is approximately 15:00. Distance paddled: 20 km

Limitations
  • family:  no children under the age of 14 accepted unless accompanied by a guardian & there are no other paying clients 
  • minimum of 2 people on departure
