Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is located in the beautiful and historically rich Eastern Cape. The Reserve model is based on restoring barren farmland to pristine wilderness, and reintroducing game that originally flourished in the area. The Kwandwe Conservation Initiative strives to ensure an ecologically balanced wildlife reserve. Kwandwe means 'Place of the Blue Crane' in Xhosa (the local culture), and is home to a population of these majestic endangered birds. The Reserve sponsors the Blue Crane Initiative, assisting survival of the species. Kwandwe Private Game Lodge is surrounded by 16000 hectares of exclusive, malaria-free wilderness. Overlooking the wide and winding Great Fish River, the camp is masterfully contoured to blend with the magnificent landscape. Locals in-the-know will tell you that May is the Eastern Cape's best month. The "small rains" are over by April and there is a beautiful flush of green growth and flowers and the Aloes, for which the Eastern Cape is world famous, begin blooming in May too. The cooler weather means that insects - notably termites - are more active during the day, rather than at night, making it easier to witness Kwandwe's nocturnal mammals that feed on them - Aardvark, Bat-eared Fox and Aardwolf.Frontiers @ Kwandwe: This is an exclusive package led by Kwandwe's resident historian and raconteur Alan Weyer. This safari is a unique adventure exploring the Eastern Cape's rich historical and cultural past. The combination of twice-daily game drives in a private 4x4 safari vehicle with exciting visits to ancient San (Bushman) rock art sites and neighbouring forts and military towns, such as Fort Beaufort and Grahamstown, offers you the ultimate historic Big Five safari. The Frontiers @ Kwandwe safari is a private experience, and needs to be booked in advance.

9 luxurious suites The cottages feature intimate living areas, bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, covered verandas and private thatched observation deck each with their own plunge pool on the lush banks overlooking the river. Along with the main lodge accommodation, one can also request accommodation in the Uplands Homestead. This is ideal for a group or family of six people. The 1905 farmhouse combines modern touches with classic architecture and the private balconies and full size swimming pool with gazebo ensure a comfortably luxurious stay.
