| Facilities The main hotel building with the Reception, Lounge, Restaurant and Bar is situated a couple of minutes walk from the airstrip where guests arrive on the only flight each day. The buffet style restaurant serves local cuisine in an informal setting using mostly fresh produce including fresh fish and vegetables from the island. In the boutique you will find a wide range of hand printed t-shirts, shorts and sarongs for both adults and children. Essentials such as films, shampoo, and sun cream are always available as well as postcards and stamps. Guests may use the lodge pc to send and receive e-mails. Beach Towels are available from reception. A well stocked library is available with over 1000 books, the majority in English, French and German. Some other languages are also available.
A guided nature tour which gives an insight into the island's flora and fauna takes place regularly. (In English or French). Other activities are sea kayaking in single or double kayaks (and life jackets) and guests are fully briefed before use. Snorkelling equipment is also available. Games facilities such as table tennis, pools and board games are provided. | Accommodation 24 simple but very comfortable individual chalets
Chalets are nestled amongst what remains of the island's old coconut plantation. Each has a king-sized bed, large shower room and separate toilet, lounge corner and spacious patio overlooking the gardens to the sea beyond. Each chalet will accommodate a third adult and child or two extra children.
There is no air-conditioning in the rooms, but excellent natural ventilation and ceiling fans ensure the rooms are kept cool. | Family Children under 2 years stay free of charge. Children between the age of 2 and 11 pay approximately half of the adult rate. Babysitting and children's early dinner are available on request. | ecoQuest
Conservation: Turtle monitoring programme Georges Norah, the Island Manager, was responsible for setting up the turtle monitoring programme on Bird Island in 1995. Several members of staff also take part in the monitoring. The majority of turtles which lay on the island are Hawksbill Turtles, but the endangered green turtles may also be seen. During the Hawksbill nesting season all guests are briefed as part of their introductory welcome talk on arrival at the Island on what they should do if they see a turtle whilst walking on the beach. This is so that she is not disturbed and so that they can enjoy this wonderful sight. As all the monitoring team have their normal jobs with the Lodge, it is not always possible for them to do regular patrols during the busy season, so guests are encouraged to report any sightings to reception so that any information can be recorded.
If a nest is found it is marked with a numbered post and the date recorded. The turtle is then checked for tags, and her tag numbers recorded. Damaged or missing tags are replaced and if she has no tags she is tagged. Her carapace is measured and her general condition is noted. It is unusual for a guest who stays 3 or 4 nights during the peak months of mid-October to mid-January not to see a turtle laying and likewise from mid-December to mid-March not to see hatchlings emerging. | Access Charter flights: - ±30 minute daily flight from Mahe | | |
