Fundu Lagoon is the epitome of a 'bare foot paradise' with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It has been designed for couples and groups of friends looking to escape the usual holiday crowds. Divers and watersports lovers are also catered for who are looking for a perfect combination of quality activities and some of the best diving in the world. Whatever you’re looking for, Fundu Lagoon provides a friendly, relaxed haven of peace and outstanding natural beauty.

Fundu Lagoon lies on a peninsular with large expanses of mangrove nearby the resort. The mangrove ecosystem is a precious world abundant in wildlife sustaining a wide variety of birdlife living alongside the large numbers of crabs, insect life and fish life which coexist in this environment. You can visit this unexplored wilderness by taking a boat or canoe trip down the coast.

Fundu Lagoon will also reveal an astonishing array of inter-tidal species. This is particularly interesting for bird watchers as the waders, such as herons, ibis and egret, flock to the area to hunt for small invertebrates and fish left behind on the sands and in the shallow sea pools. Other findings include many different shells, crabs, starfish and the peculiar mudskipper, a fish that can skip across the sands on its pectoral fins.

The jewel of Pemba, Mesali Island is a highlight of everyone’s stay here at Fundu Lagoon. As Pemba’s only marine sanctuary, its protected reefs provide a home to an exceptional range of sea life. Pristine corals attract vast numbers of reef fish and animals coming in from deeper waters you might bump into manta and eagle rays, barracuda and other game fish and reef sharks.
Ngezi forest in the North of Pemba is a beautiful area of natural rain forest populated by large numbers of birdlife, the vervet monkey and full of spectacular trees.

Please note that Fundu Lagoon is closed from 16 April and 14 June each year.

Funds from guests have enabled the building of this school - however, teaching materials are still needed.Community
Fundu Lagoon is on the Wambaa peninsular on the Western coast of Pemba island. There are over 6 small villages on the peninsular, and the nearest one is Kutukuu. The owners and management of the hotel are committed to helping the local community in whatever way they can - not only do they directly employ many local people, but also buy fresh fish daily from Pemban fishermen and much of the fruit and some varieties of vegetables come from around the peninsular. They are also currently encouraging the formation of a women's co-operative for the growing of vegetables so that more fresh organic produce can be bought right from their doorstep.

Guests can enjoy walking around the village, accompanied by a member of staff from the hotel who will advise on etiquette and translate for the village children who are always very excited to receive visitors. Donations from these visitors in fact have enabled the building of a much-needed school. The people in the village would be extremely grateful to any visitors planning to go to Fundu Lagoon who can bring out spare exercise books, used English encyclopaedias, maps, old text books in English, and of course ballpoint pens. When you arrive, you'll be taken to meet the kids and you can hand over the gifts yourselves.
