| The Pongola Game Reserve is sanctuary to a large variety of wildlife species, including giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, impala, hyena, buffalo and leopard. On 13 June 1997, exactly 100 years after the last reported elephant sighting in the Pongola area, two breeding herds of elephant were reintroduced from Kruger National Park. Prior to this, a substantial number of white rhino were successfully translocated from the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Park. Due to the diversity of habitat, the variety of birdlife is prolific, with in excess of 350 species recorded. Pongola Game Reserve forms the core conservation area of the developing Pongolapoort Biosphere Reserve, which follow the principles of the IUCN Biosphere programme. This co-operative conservation project between private land owners, KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, tribal communities and Swaziland, aims to form a large ecologically and socio-economically viable big five reserve, which includes the entire Pongolapoort dam and its surrounding area - total area in excess of 35 000 hectares.
The lodge is located close to many renowned Zululand game and nature reserves, including Mkuzi Game Reserve, Ndumu Game Reserve, Tembe Elephant Reserve, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Park. |
