Community: Children in the Wilderness The River Club, situated on the Zambezi River upstream from Victoria Falls, is closely involved with the villages adjacent to the lodge. Of particular concern and interest is schooling. The River Club in Zambia began its involvement in the nearby village of Simonga by paying for the school fees of all 350 children in 2001. Since then the government has made free education available to all youngsters in the country. The River Club is now engaged in a number of projects, primarily aimed at improving the lives of the children, but in general uplifting the quality of life of everyone in the village. Three wells were dug in the area, thereby reducing the distances that the children have to carry buckets and other receptacles when assisting their mothers with bringing water to their homes. An old pump is being repaired that will feed water into a 5 000 litre irrigation project which is being planned at the moment. The lodge continues to raise money for this project whilst donations from guests help to purchase books, pencils and other supplies for the school. The River Club received sports equipment and clothing for the pupils from a guest who has also sponsored four children to progress to schools of higher education in Livingstone for the next four years. Other financial donors include a young American boy who raised US$500 during his bar mitzvah for the school. Future projects in the village include a clinic and a team to run it. | Rate includes .
