9 day Walk in the ParksThis walking trip offers the best of both of South Africa's main attractions - the wildlife of Kruger National Park combined with the scenic beauty and floral diversity of Cape Town.
  • Game drives
  • Table Mountain
  • Guided walks
  • Kruger National Park
  • Cape Town

Experience two of Africa's great national parks on foot, guided by experienced and qualified ranger guides. Kruger is one of the ancient continent's iconic wildlife sanctuaries where the walker can follow game tracks and reconnect with nature. Here you can touch, smell and hear raw Africa, yet retreat to the comforts of your camp after each game walk.

Juxtapose this with the almost European feel of the Cape, a melting pot of cultures clinging to Africa's southernmost extremity, yet the site of a remarkably diverse floral kingdom, the Cape Floristic Region. The Cape fold mountains and the coastline are scenically awesome, and Table Mountain National Park is unusual for its proximity to a port city. Your guides will escort you on walks that take in Cape Town's historical and cultural colour, and the mountain's table to sample its floral splendour.

In Kruger National Park you will be based at Rhino Post Camp and Rhino Plains Camp, the former a modern, luxury lodge; the latter a tented camp styled in the spirit of a far-off colonial past. The daily routine at Rhino Walking Safaris follows a time-perfected rhythm of early morning bush walks, satisfying brunches, midday siestas, high tea, a bush walk or game drive, an incomparable African sunset followed by a great meal. The Kruger walks also feature a unique experience: an optional tree-top canopy "sleep out", something not to be missed.

Start: Johannesburg
Day 1 Southern Kruger
The Kruger Park leg commences with a 70 minute charter flight from Johannesburg International Airport to Skukuza, followed by a short drive to Rhino Post Camp. Rhino Post is a luxury 16-bed lodge set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi River. After high tea a game drive winds down with sundowners, followed by a night drive back to camp and the main meal of the day.
Day 2
The early morning bush walk follows coffee and rusks. On this day you will hike to Rhino Plains Camp through big game territory while your gear is portaged by camp staff.
Day 3
Plains Camp takes its name from the Timbitene plain which it overlooks. Here you can watch the waterhole while relaxing in the splash pool. The tented camp has a wilder feel than the lodge. Morning and late-afternoon (or game drives) walks circle out from the camp.
Day 4
Sleep Out facilitiesSleep Out accommodationThe now-familiar routine continues. Walk different sectors today, following rhino trails and elephant paths. You also have the option to overnight at "Sleep Out" camp consisting of platforms suspended in the woodland canopy. If you have never experienced the skittish quiet of an African night, do not miss this opportunity.
(minimum 4 persons for sleep out)
Day 5 Cape Town
Sleep in or enjoy your final game walk before checking out. You will be transferred to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport in time for your two-hour South African Express Airways flight to Cape Town.

On arrival you will be met by our representatives and transferred to your hotel or guest house.
Day 6
Meet at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront at 08h30. From here you will be lead by boat and on foot, through the multifaceted tapestry of Cape Town's eclectic architecture, weaving the story of the City's cosmopolitan, often tragic, past.

The day ends at the beautifully restored Platteklip Wash Houses on the banks of the Camissa (sweet water) River on the lower slopes of Table Mountain. Here you will meet the Hoerikwaggo™ Trail Guides - your hosts on days 2 and 3. After dinner - a mouth-watering Cape Malay meal - you can relax around the fire, or send an e-mail or simply chat to your fellow hikers.

Walking distance: 7 km, approximately 6,5 hours
Day 7
After an early rise and a sumptuous continental breakfast you will hike to the lower cable way station. From there, weather permitting, you will catch the Cable Car to the top of Table Mountain.

From the upper cable station the trail winds through pristine fynbos to Maclear's Beacon for a picnic lunch. The Beacon is the highest point on the Cape Peninsula and was constructed in 1884 by the astronomer Thomas Maclear who initiated the first geodetic survey of the Cape. After lunch continue via the historic Smuts Track to the overnight accommodation at the restored Overseers Cottage which offers awesome night time views of the City and the mountain chain.

Tonight is the night for a traditional South African braai (barbeque) where the chef will spoil you with steaks, turned to perfection, and an assortment of salads and vegetables. The outdoor braai will only be lit on a low fire-risk day. Should the wind be too strong or the vegetation too dry the meal will be prepared in the kitchen.

Walking distance: 9,5 km, approximately 6 hours
Day 8
Today a morning hike will take you to the north western edges of the mountain. The route offers plenty of interesting and historic features and scenic trails. After lunch the guides will lead you down the magnificent, forested Nursery Ravine to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens where the trail ends. Meals included today are breakfast & lunch.

Transfer from Kirstenbosch back to your hotel in central Cape Town.

Walking distance: 9 km, approximately 6 hours
