Aliwal Shoal and surrounds travel info

Aliwal Shoal lies 3 - 5 kms offshore of Umkomaas town, 40min drive south of the coastal city of Durban. The Shoal is an ancient, fossilized sand dune and is about 3km long by 300m wide.

Seasons
"Raggies" are best enjoyed from Jul-Nov when the sharks, having followed the migration of sardines, arrive on the Shoal in their hundreds to breed. The visibility is also good. Sites that are nearer to the coast are better explored in winter (Apr-Oct), as summer rains Nov-Mar) may cause run-off from rivers that reduce visibility.
Feb-Mar are good months for spotting Tiger Sharks.
