Durban travel info

Durban is the largest, and fastest growing commercial centre in KwaZulu-Natal. The richness of the tropical vegetation is evidence of year-round sunshine.

The city and its surrounds are resplendent in the colours of indigenous and exotic flowering trees, shrubs and gardens. Durban offers a kaleidoscope culture - from African to European to Asian.

Victorian houses in the suburb of Berea; multiple Hindu temples; the largest Islamic Mosque in the Southern Hemisphere; the skyscrapers in the CBD expresses Durban's architectural diversity.

Well-known Grey Street area provides the visitor with the aromatic scents of curries and spices, and the striking colours of the traditional dress of the local Indian women. Durban is home to the largest Indian population outside of India.

African township communities with their own rich and colourful cultural activities surround Durban itself. In recent times the townships have become a popular destination for visitors. Here visitors can experience typically vibrant African neighbourhoods where music is heard day and night, goats and chickens wander the streets, and taverns provide a warm African welcome.

The harbour was once a natural lagoon and is now the largest and busiest in South Africa. The bay also gives Durban its Zulu name, eThekwini.

The Durban beachfront termed, "The Golden Mile", is home to a large number of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, curio sellers and dozens of other attractions that should be in every visitor's itinerary.

Sailing, snorkelling, scuba, swimming, surfing, and fishing - all of these activities and more are on offer by local operators. Along with water sports, the city also provides a wealth of music, theatre, museums, art galleries, monuments, shopping centres, and, of course, Durban's famous nightlife.

Durban is ideally located and serves as gateway to the Drakensberg, malaria-free National Game Parks and magnificent wetlands area such St. Lucia.
