Equus Reserve falls within the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and encompasses four distinctly different habitats: afro-montane, bushveld savannah, grasslands and wetlands resulting in a great diversity of flora and fauna. Other features of the landscape are open sweeping grasslands, wetlands and dams, and hidden mountain streams that shape the valleys.

The tree layer is characterised, among others, by Transvaal Beech, Red Seringa, Stemfruit, Common sugarbush, Velvet bushwillow, Silver clusterleaf and Peeling plane.

The sweeping grasslands of the main valleys offer fast riding while the ridges and mountain areas can be explored at a slower pace both on horseback and on foot. Riders will enjoy panoramic views across miles and miles of Africa.

Wildlife
Wildlife indigenous to the area occurs on the reserve in limited numbers - no new species have been introduced and the land is not game-fenced; the animals are here because they want to be.

You should see:
kudu, reedbuck, klipspringer, bushpig, baboon, warthog, duiker, bushbuck, jackal

You may see:
porcupine, aardvark, caracal, serval, civet, genet, otter and water mongoose

Fresh spoor of leopard and brown hyena are seen frequently.

Birds
Over 140 birds have been identified. Of special note are the Cape vulture from the largest breeding colony in Africa situated in nearby Marakele National Park and the Blue Crane who roost and feed in the grasslands in the summer months.
