Fish River Canyon travel info The Fish River Canyon is a 161 km long and 27 km wide ravine with a maximum depth of 550 m. The canyon began froming nearly two million years ago from sandstone, shale and lava deposits. The awesome grandeur of the canyon is surpassed only by the Grand Canyon. Viewing points are superbly rewarding at dawn and dusk, when the steep cliffs are awash with colour. Hiking through the canyon is a popular endurance test for the hardy, and regarded by hikers as the ultimate challenge. Numerous stone age sites have been found. The canyon is populated by klipspringers, rock hyraxes, baboons, kudus, leopards and Mountain Zebra - the chances of seeing these animals are slim. Birdlife is prolific - over 60 species occurring among the cliffs.
Seasons The summer months betwen Nov-April are the hottest months with temperatures ranging between 36 and 40 degrees Celius. May-Sep are cooler and drier, yet daytime temperatures are pleasant at around 26 degrees Celsius. Please note that the hiking trail in the canyon is closed in summer due to extreme heat and the threat of flash floods.
