The Khwai River is one of the major rivers of the delta in Botswana, though it occasionally dries up, leaving a few hippo pools to await the fresh waters of the new season.

Khwai River travel info It forms the northern border of the Moremi Game Reserve and is host to several lodges and photographic safari camps, among them the Khwai River Lodge near the reserve's northern entrance gate.
A herd of red lechwe are often seen galloping through the reed beds in the early morning, they pauses to browse, then gallop away. The nocturnal 'chorus' includes hyena, lion, baboon and crickets, but is inevitably dominated by the grunting and snorting of hippo - hardly tuneful, but certainly authentic Africa. Birdlife is plentiful, with saddle-billed stork, wattle crane and numerous raptors, including the giant eagle owl.
