Little Karoo travel info This is a landscape full of secrets and surprises. You can enter this sunshine land through one of seven passes which will prove to be am experience in itself. The plain of the Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) about 60 km wide and 250km long and is sandwiched between the Swartberg Mountains to the north and the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountains to the south, which separate the Klein Karoo from the coastal terrace. Little rain falls in this area but the soil is irrigated by a network of streams, which rise in the mountains, forming the beautiful Rust-en-Vrede and Meiringspoort waterfalls, among others. In climate, terrain and vegetation, the Klein Karoo is a perfect habitat for ostriches-desert birds, which migrated from the north and settled here many years ago. Today, the large flocks of ostriches are among South Africa's most popular tourist attractions. There are four ostrich show farms where you can enjoy this fascinating bird and its habits. The area is also well known for the magnificent Cango Caves, a cheetah farm and locally produced port wines and it's spectacular scenic beauty. back to Little Karoo top
