Namib Naukluft Park travel info

The park comprises four sections: Sesriem & Sossusvlei, Naukluft, Namib (between the Kuiseb and Swakop Rivers) and Sandwich Harbour. The Namib Desert Park has all aspects of the desert - sand dunes, granite mountains, plains of grass, gypsum and quartz, the Kuiseb Canyon, a lagoon (at Sandwich Harbour), camel thorn, ana trees, the largest known concentration of Welwitschias and game.

Most of this vast territory remains trackless and completely inaccessible to the public. No permit is necessary for driving on the main roads, but to spend the night or leave the main road a permit should be obtained in Windhoek, Lüderitz, Swakopmund or Sesriem.

Day visitors are not allowed into the Naukluft Section of the Park. Due to a restriction on the number of visitors to the Park at one time, visits are limited to a maximum of three nights only. There are four camping sites, which can accommodate a maximum of eight people each. Exploring this scenically beautiful area on foot is essential to gain maximum enjoyment. Even short walks in the vicinity of the campsite are rewarding, as there are mountain pools close by.

Seasons
The best time to go is in the dry winter months from Apr-Sep, as days are pleasant with temperatures averaging at around 25 degrees Celsius. Nights, however, can be very cold. Summer (Oct-Mar) can be very hot with temperatures soaring to above 40 degrees Celsius.

Wildlife
The Namib is not so much a wildlife destination but a "landscape" destination. 200 bird species have been recorded in the region.
Wildlife that you may see includes oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra, steenbok, jackal and baboon.
