NamibRand Nature Reserve travel info South-west of Namibia's capital Windhoek, close to Sossusvlei, lies the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one hour away by aircraft. In the west, for a distance of nearly 100 km, this semi-desert region shares a common border with the Namib-Naukluft Park. The imposing Nubib mountain range forms a natural border to the east.
The particular attraction of NamibRand is the diversity of different desert landscapes found in one cohesive region. Virtually all facets of the Namib Desert are represented here. Expansive sand and gravel plains and endless stretches of grass savannah alternate with majestic mountain ranges and vegetated dune belts of deep-red sand The variety of flora and fauna is as fascinating as the colour nuances of the landscape, which change as the day progresses. This unique, ever-changing diversity cannot be captured in photographs or on film, nor can it be given justice to fully in articles or travel guide books - it can only be truly experienced on the reserve itself.
Seasons The best time to go is in the dry winter months from Apr-Sep, as days are pleasant with temperatures averaging at around 25 degrees Celsius. Nights, however, can be very cold. Summer (Oct-Mar) can be very hot with temperatures soaring to above 40 degrees Celsius.
Wildlife Gemsbok, mountain and plains zebra, springbok, red hartebeest, bat-eared fox, spotted hyena, Cape fox, African wildcats, kudu, klipspringer, baboon and leopard. Over a hundred species of birds have been recorded. back to NamibRand Nature Reserve top
