Northern Frontier travel info

Laikipia lies noth of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya - much of the area consists of privately-owned reserves of low plains and forested valleys. The reserves are a mix of cattle and wildlife. Some are community-run wildlife sanctuaries, active in conservation programs. The most noted reserve here is Ol Ari Nyiro - home of Kuki Gallman, author of I dreamed of Africa. These reserves are a fantastic way to understand the interaction of local culture with wildlife, and a rewarding opportunity to get away from the more crowded destinations.
Leopard, lion and cheetah as well as elephant, kudu giraffes and other gazelles can be found in the acacia forests of the Sabuk wilderness region in northern Laikipia.
Samburu National reserve is only 165 sqaure kilometres in extent. Its varied landscape of scrub, riverine forest and thornbush is home to elephant, lion, and gazelles adapted to a semi-desert environment. The birdlife is also good.

Precautions
Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects - please test before you depart.
