Wild Coast travel info The Eastern Cape coast, which is situated in the former Transkei area, is aptly named the Wild Coast. This Xhosa tribal homeland is characterised by green rolling hills, deep valleys and gorges; with areas of indigenous forest and palm trees. Herds of grazing cattle, goats and sheep; and neat rondavel dwelling dot this beautiful landscape. The Wild Coast is of course also known for the beautiful and isolated beaches that stretch for miles.
Activities include hiking, sailing, swimming, surfing and skin-diving. The largest of the seaside villages are Port St Johns and Coffee Bay. Other much smaller and generally charming beach and river-mouth resorts dot the shoreline. The infrastructure here is not as well developed as other areas of the country, but ecoAfrica works with a few responsible local operators who are experienced in hosting groups and individuals and introducing them to this largely undiscovered area.
Travel to the Wild Coast is recommended for more adventurous travellers who want to experience off-the-beaten-track South Africa. You will be rewarded with a rich experience not many have had!
