Xakanaxa travel info When the Khwai people moved south to Xakanana, a different San tribe had already named it. According to chief Kwere of Khwai village 'Xakanaxa' means 'place of the Date Palm', which is rather unusual as these trees are not common to the area?
Xakanaxa is a beautiful lagoon nestled in the heart of the Moremi Wild Life Reserve in Botswana. Here, where the life-giving waters of the Okavango meet up with the vast Kalahari, ancient Mopane forests, open grassland, seasonal floodplains and riverine habitats have formed, creating one of the most magnificent and welcoming animal sanctuaries in all Africa. This varied habitat attracts and supports a diversity of wildlife, which is unrivalled in Botswana with possible sightings of wild dog, cheetah, leopard, lion, elephant and buffalo being highlights. The birding in this region is exceptional and of particular interest are the heronries at Gadikwe Lagoon, which may be visited on power boating excursions
