Zambezi White-water travel info The Victoria Falls are the largest waterfalls in the world with regards to volume. The spray of the Falls - known as the "smoke that thunders" - can be seen from miles away. It is here that the mighty Zambezi River tumbles 200m over the Batoka Gorge into the most spectacular Grade 5 white water rapids imaginable. With rapid names such as "Stairway to heaven", "the Devil's Bowl", "Overland Truck Eater", "The Terminator" and "Oblivion", you can be guaranteed a very wet and thrilling ride!
The 26km strip of intense rapids is interspersed with more tranquil sections, which allow your heartbeart to return to normal, your knees to stop shaking and your eyes to feast on the spectacular scenery. The low water season between July and January is the best time to go. Between March and May, rafting may stop entirely as the Zambezi is in full spate, and the river unsafe to navigate.
You will have to be relatively fit - besides being a relatively confident swimmer, you will also have to hike into and out of the gorge. Various options are available for the half-,full- and multiple day trips (a word of advice - if you take the self-paddle option on the one day trip, with the guide serving as a rudder at the back - do not sit right up front!)
