After an early start in Johannesburg, we departed for a lengthy, but very
comfortable transfer, in air-conditioned vehicles to a private bush camp
situated in the Kruger National Park. Facilities are basic, but comfortable.
After unpacking and refreshments we got onto open 4x4 vehicles and embarked
on the quest for wildlife.
In the evening we returned to camp for a boma dinner and some traditional
Shangaan song and dance. The smell of the animal skins when thumped with
sticks was unforgettable, the sound reverberating deep within my torso too.
Don’t be shy when they invite to join in on the dancing!
The following day we enjoyed a full day’s
game viewing in an open vehicle, enjoying what southern Kruger National Park
has to offer. We were privileged to see a pack of wild dog resting in the
shade of a mopane tree.
Returning to the bush camp, it was by group consensus that we refreshed in
the splash pool, a Windhoek lager in one hand!
The highlight of my trip was a 05h00 morning bush walk. For me this is the
best way to tickle all your senses., bearing in mind that you are in ‘their’
territory. The guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
After bidding the bush farewell we travelled via the Panorama Route visiting
Three Rondavels and Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, and Bourke’s Luck
Potholes and with all the breathtaking views. After spending two days in the
bush the private lodge next to the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary, was
very welcoming. My first encounter with the chimps was mind blowing! They
are much bigger than I had initially anticipated. These orphaned chimps have
sad stories to tell, but it’s wonderful to know that they were identified,
transported and reintroduced to a home away from home. I learnt that it is
an enormous challenge (financially and legally) to transport them and then
teach them their basic skills for survival.
I believe this trip provides a genuine eco-experience because it offers the
opportunity to experience the Kruger National Park, while also contributing
to the local Mdluli community. The good work done at the chimpanzee
sanctuary is an added bonus.
