Dear Traveller

I have been fortunate enough to spend the past week in the Kruger National Park and the surrounding private reserves. One of the perks of working in the tourism industry is that we need to periodically visit the lodges and areas that we promote - so although in theory it looked like business, in reality it reeked of leisure!

I had a wonderful time with game sightings aplenty, but since I'm part of our office based operations, my pleasure came mostly from witnessing first hand, the excitement of our guests. For most, it was their first trip to Africa, and it was a real treat for me to see the delight roused by the first sign of elephant dung on the road - and then to see that escalate into utter silence when the real thing crossed our path metres from our open vehicle!

Good news for whale watchers
The International Whaling Commission has voted against Japan's proposal to expand whale hunting quotas. The movement was supported by whaling nations Norway and Iceland, but opposed by South Africa and other western nations. The vote was expected to be close, so this is indeed a relief for countries like our own where whale watching has become an important sector of ecotourism.

Blyde River CanyonKruger-to-Canyon Biosphere Reserve
This month marked the launch of SA's fourth biosphere reserve. The concept aims to integrate people, conservation and development with the outcome of a sustainable managed ecosystem between the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon. It is hoped that the 2.4 million hectare biosphere will bring added economic benefits and job creation to the region.

2. Have Your Say

Although June, July and August are South Africa's winter months, the weather in Kruger proved most favourable and certainly this is South Africa's secret season. Not only are there fewer mosquitoes, but game viewing is at its best as animals become concentrated around remaining water points and the bush is less dense than in the wetter summer months. So winter is the ideal time for travel, especially with the low season rates too!
