The more I fly, the more I realise that I've become the kind of air-traveller most people hope they don't get seated next to. In the isle seat, I don't like standing up to let anyone pass as I'm afraid the plane will become unsteady. If I'm next to the window, I keep the window blind closed; if I'm in the middle I need to grip both armrests to stop any involuntary jumpy movements and either way, I have to keep looking around for the flight attendants to see if they look worried yet. The reason I bring it up is that I have found myself in this situation 3 weekends in a row. Sometimes I can't help myself from asking my neighbour if that sound is normal, or whether it might be a problem with the engine.

On my last flight, I lost my boarding pass twice before getting on the plane - my nerves were barely coping when a stranger commented "its almost as if you aren't supposed to be on this flight"! I am always genuinely surprised when we have landed safely.

All this has led me to consider alternative methods of travel, and at the same time consider how this easy air travel affects the earth around us (see article 2 in this newsletter). Air travel accounts for only 3% of global warming gas emissions, but it is an industry that is growing fast and needs to be treated with care. If you're anything like me when it comes to flying, then it is certainly a more noble-sounding excuse for taking the train! Some tips on how to approach air travel responsibly can be found in this month's Have your Say article.

Single visa for East Africa by 2008
Chimp Safari with Jane Goodall InstituteThe forming of a single East African Community seems set to materialise after heads of state for neighbouring East African countries, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, met again for discussion earlier this month. The presidents of the three countries all called for elimination of cross border travel barriers. This is in line with the East African plan to promote the region as one tourism destination. President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya said that the integration of the East African region should not be difficult due to the similar cultural, economic and geographical values of the people in the area.

2. Have your say - Carbon Offsetting: As simple as that?
The effect of air travel on climate change is the subject of some controversy. At ecoAfrica, we believe in the positive effects tourism can have on conservation and communities - air travel enabling a large portion of this. It is therefore necessary that we keep up to date with the latest news in the industry and ensure that our model of ecotourism is sustainable. Carbon Offsetting: As simple as that? takes a closer look at carbon offsetting schemes...

24 day Cape Town - Vic Falls - Johannesburg

We were ecstatic about the trip and still basking in the afterglow of Africa. We hope we can return one day. The trip exceeded any and all expectations - Drifters and our guide Jan, proved to know the territory well and exhibited professionalism in every way and made each day an educational and enlightening experience.

We certainly did have a great time in Kichwa Tembo. I read somewhere in the blurb that it would be beyond our wildest dreams and that was so, particularly for my Mum who never imagined she would have that opportunity. So thank you for your assistance in making it happen.

Everything went very smoothly. We were particularly happy with our accommodation. It was extremely comfortable. The food was fantastic and plentiful and the service excellent. Our guide was knowledgeable and most helpful and the game drives were a treat. Each had it's own highlight. We did the dawn balloon ride which I think was Mum's absolute highlight and which I truly enjoyed.

I have attached a photo. It was hard to choose which to send as we saw the big 5 - yes even a leopard who was eating his kill up in a tree - and we have some really good photos.
